Hey guys I'm trying to have a go at mixing on headphones just to see whether or not I find it easier and if I can get balance/mix issues sorted faster. I currently mix on my Genelecs and they are fine but I often find that I am having to mix then listen on a grotbox, then again and again. I have noticed that my room (no acoustic proofing) gives me a lot more bass, so I will always bear this in mind when mixing. I have got my mixes sounding pretty good, but owning a pair of HD650's I thought it would be worthwhile having a go with them and one of those crossfeed plugins. I would obviously like to have lots of acoustic proofing. But would want to do this in a permanent location.

I looked at these crossfeed plugins. And they look a little complicated? I just find it a little scary mixing with a plugin over the mixbuss changing the way I listen and that 'hopefully' this is what it will sound like over speakers?? It maybe snobby but isn't there commercial plugin that might take some of the guess work out or is the Crossfeed EQ the best option? I just like to understand exactly what I'm doing with a plugin.

I kinda liken it to a compresser totally killing a track and with zero experience of using a crossfeed plugin.well I don't wanna bugger it up before I even start mixing! Just fiddle with it until you get the same sort of stereo image as on your speakers. But tbh, although they're effective in mimicking speakers over phones, I don't find that using a crossfeed tool makes any difference to my mixing decisions.

So unless you're uncomfortable mixing on your cans I wouldn't bother with a crossfeed plug-in. May be worth it if you're constantly ABing between your cans and monitors. For me, the main advantage of mixing in headphones is precisely.because. of how they present the mix - the last thing I want is a plug-in doing any sort of trickery with it before I get to hear it.

I don’t want my phones to sound like speakers. I feel it is rather like trying to EQ your Genelecs to sound like NS10s - you can do it with varying degrees of success, but to what purpose? You learn to mix on your Genelecs as they are and hopefully the mixes travel – job done. There's also the matter of working on mixes away from your own environment - if you've become dependent on that plug-in, then without it you're going to struggle. I suggest you just get used to the sound of your phones and learn how to work with what they're telling you.

Adding the variable of an adjustable plug-in between you and your mix will just give you more to worry about. I have tried the 112dB Redline Monitor, to satisfy my curiosity. The thing I noticed most was the stereo image pulling itself inwards, which might lead me to making more dramatic panning decisions – but then how would that sound on an end-listener’s headphones?

I've been mixing on headphones for 2 years now ( and would strongly recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a well treated room ). I listen to most of my music on headphones, so I already have a good reference for what sound im looking for.

Having tried a couple of free/demo crossfeed plugins im sure they only succeed in confusing the mix. On headphones your stereo image in layed out with pin point accuracy. I've tried the Red Line, but found my mix decisions to be precisely the same as when not using it. Eric James came to a similar conclusion when reviewing the SPL Phonitor, an expensive hardware unit designed to carry out the same task. The HD650s are my main mix tool too, my space is temporary and untreatable (as in I'm not allowed to, aside from furniture and hanging sheets!) so i just use monitors to reference the bass-levels and vocal positioning, as well as some horrid little Argos speakers to test how it'll sound to the average user HD650s are incredible as they are, i think the last thing I'd want to do is change their stereo imaging! Bear in mind how many people will hear your music on little earbuds and it's arguably most important to have the mix working for headphones, and furthermore in mono, both of which can be easily be checked with you 650s.

And

I've always found Genelec moitors have quite big bass and treble but all ears are different and, if you have no treatment, standing waves are the most likely culprit of your bass booms! Do try a mix solely on the 650s and see how it goes, it may surprise you!

I find that headphone mixing is similar to getting used to the 'sound' of your particular set of monitors and mixing environment - use other playback systems as a reference and you eventually get used to it.

I was going to shell out a grand for some higher end monitor speakers but being in a rented terraced house with a less than ideal space, I'm seriousley considering upgrading to the HD800. Me too regarding the 650's - no plugs for me, though I am cautious about reverb levels and any wide panning I might be tempted to do.

I bought the HD650's because I just wanted a proper goto set of headphones. That just show me what is and what isn't in a mix.

I really thought bloody hell having to put on a crossfeed plugin is going to add another variable in the chain. Like I said about mixing through a compressor it is great if you know what you want it to do. But just strapping it across and then mixing not having any clue why you have it there. Well it just felt like that scenario.

So pretty much everyone is saying just mix on the HD650's without the crossfeed and then the normal checks on the ole boombox well that makes my life a lot easier. I would love to spend out properly on acoustic proofing and when I have a permanent space then its obviously going to be the best route. Until then I will have a try with the ole HD's and see what happens Thanks for all the replies.

Until then I will have a try with the ole HD's and see what happens Yes. But do take the time to listen to plenty of reference material on them as well. It's no struggle as it's a joy to listen to your favourite tunes on HD650s, but it will make it that much easier to mix if you're not so used to mixing on cans.

It works fine though with my HD650 and AKG601, both high impedance. (also, the chinese power supply that came with it is a piece of trash. I binned it and bought a better one.) hope that helps you.

I'm happy using the HD650s with my FF800, but noticed a significant improvement using a dedicated D/A and monitor controller (Dangerous D-Box) connected digitally to the FF. Can you mix on them alone? Well, sometimes it can be a pain mixing on them, as their precision can make small non-issues rather distracting when you're not trying to focus on minute details.

Particularly if you're trying to get plenty of stereo spread and using lots of sends. That's one reason it's nice to use them alongside rather than instead of a decent speaker-based monitoring setup.
