I often joke that if I got a dollar for every time some asked me, 'Is that a tattoo?' I'd have enough money to pay for a full sleeve (or a small flower, at least).
Most of the time, the question isn't in reference to the actual tattoos on my arms and legs, but in regards to the designs I paint on my face with black. Waiters, publicists, and fellow subway riders have all been the origin of the inevitable question. However, the stars, hearts, lines, and abstract shapes on my face are typically created with M.A.C. Liquidlast Liner — not a tattoo gun. The liquid liner was discontinued a couple years ago but relaunched earlier this year with two different black options: Wet Road (a pearl black) and Point Black (a matte black). Both are equally the deepest, darkest pitch-black eyeliners I've ever encountered, and I've been a devotee to for one-third of my life. Combine the intensity of the pigment with its matte, skin-like finish and you have the Liquidlast Liner mimicking the effect of a fresh tattoo.

Usually, liquid liners have a hint of shine to them, including the beloved; M.A.C.' S liner is shine-free, however, even if you use Wet Road. The pigment can be painted on with the M.A.C. Liquidlast Liner's paintbrush-like applicator, which is thin enough to create sharp wings and delicate shapes, though it can also fan out for thicker, bolder lines. Once the Liquidlast Liner dries down, it's nearly as permanent as a tattoo, too — that is, until you rub an oil-based cleanser like on it. Then, your skin will return to its face tattoo-less form, offering you a brand-new canvas to paint upon.
Before you decide to wash it away, the liner won't smear, smudge, or run no matter how much you sweat, cry, or get caught in a torrential downpour. If matte-black eye makeup isn't your thing, you can also experiment with the five other shades it comes in like Misty Me (a metallic silver that is my second favorite shade), Keep It Currant (a maroon), and Naked Bond (a copper). At one point, the liner came in an amazing metallic turquoise called Blue Me Over, but I can't seem to find it anywhere — R.I.P., beautiful eyeliner. Try the M.A.C. Liquidlast Liner for yourself now for $21 on. I give you at least an hour before someone asks if you got a face tattoo.
