Artefacts And Tricks For Mac
Hey Guys - So I'm coming to the end of one of my first recording projects. It's my band (whom recently broke up on good terms) and I've been manually editing drums with good results. But now I'm ready to do the final touch ups on the drums to really make them tight as hell.
I want to make some 'tasteful' use of the Elastic Audio on the drum tracks. So far, the results have been pretty good, except.I keep hearing these audio artifacts on the overhead tracks. Everything else still sounds good (snare, toms, kick) but the cymbals from the overheads just sound weird due to the elastic audio. As soon as I disable the elastic audio the cymbals sound good again.
Is there something I can do to counter-act these artifacts? Hey, right now I'm using pro tools LE 8 and don't have multi-track beat detective (I'm unwilling to drop 300 bucks for the expansion toolkit right now). But I have been using the rhythmic setting and even tried rendering through X-Form. I still heard the artifacts on the cymbals.
I've read that switching to the polyphonic setting might actually lessen these artifacts on the overheads. Can anyone suggest if this is a good way to go? I would be experimenting with my rig right now but I'm stuck at work so I'm just trying to kill the time lol. Once I get everything squished/stretched the way I want, I will record them to NEW audio tracks and NOT commit the EA'ed tracks. (you can inactivate and hide the tracks you EA'd). Again, just my preference. As for the artifacts. You can only move stuff so far. You may find that you have to separate and position your tracks if they are more than a nudge out of time. Cymbals will be especially noticable as they are 'long' notes.
If you haven't grouped your tracks into an edit group before manipulating them, there may be some phase issues, but it's likely you are trying to move something a bit too much. EA is not a magic wand, well, not a supermagic wand. It does a brilliant job but it cannot make a poor performance sound like a million bucks. If worse comes to worse, cut n paste.
